For this weeks learning task we had to evaluate some websites and discuss their authenticity.

www.haggishunt.scotsman.com -
4 clues that give away that this site is a spoof -

• 
  Haggis is something you eat. it is a pudding made with liver & stomach etc of a sheep.
• 
  the "Haggis" looks like a platypus which is only found in Australia not Scotland
• 
  The website ends in .com, which means it is a commercial website, if it was real it would end in .org
• 
  under the list of what the Haggis's look like there is a rare "golden" haggis and there are no species that have a "rare golden" anything.

www.molossia.org
4 Clues that give away this site is a spoof -

• 
  the site doesn't say exactly where Molossia is, it gives several different places contained within the US which don't link up
• when describing why Molossia is called it says that - " "morro", which means small rock or small hill, the suffix "ssia" being added because it sounds good." which is obviously supposed to be funny, not serious.
• 
  there are only 4 citizens in Molossia
• 
  you have to email the government before you visit Molossia

www.martinlutherking.org
my expectations for this site -
i think this site will be about Martin Luther King and all the great things he did for America, and it will also have a copy of his speech "I have a dream".
the website address makes the viewer to the site immediately know that it will contain information about Martin Luther King.

My first impressions of the site -
i think this is a spoof site because it has quotes of him saying "I’m not a negro tonight" and a video he made called "The brothas' be peaceful in da' hood".

My thoughts on the website after looking at it thoroughly -
This website is clearly defamatory to Martin Luther King calling him a "plastic god" & saying that his book "stride towards freedom" was plagiarized from numerous sources. They also call him a "sexual degenerate, an America-hating Communist, and a criminal betrayer of even the interests of his own people." this website also talks about things that may not have happened - and as a viewer I can’t be sure because it gives no proof.
I had a look at who published the site "Stormfront" - www.stormfront.org - and they seem to be associated with the K.K.K. fighting for "white pride". So this website was clearly bias and unsupported.

5 things i learned in this lecture -

• What the ends of the websites mean eg. - .com - commercial nature, .net - a network - used when .com is not available, .org - a non profit website, used to state an idea
• the www. is only one part of the internet, there's email etc.
• that the internet and the net are different
• that Tim Berners - Lee made the internet in 1989 as a way to facilitate sharing research and information
• there are plenty of spoof websites out there and you have to be careful of what you believe.

• Endnote is intergrated into MS word
• Endnote has a wide variety of Refrence Services
• can be used as a Refrence manager
• can be used as a Bibliography maker
• not easy to use

Review on "Bits and Atoms" -

Negroponte's online archive discusses the difference between atoms and bits.
The atoms being real things such as newspapers, books and magazines and bits being information held within the computer.

He informs readers about the pros of bits such as -

• bits are able to travel quickly all over the world
  
• bits are not heavy and did not need to go through the hassles of customs - unlike atoms
  
• Everything being converted to bits is a reality far in the future.
  
• Bits are digital and always there - unlike atoms that can stop being produced.
  
• Bits are cheap unlike books which require expenses such as the paper, inventory and shipping

Negroponte makes atoms seem like they are inferior to bits as he sees them as slow and not as productive as bits are. For example the dilemma with the FedEx company holding up some CD’s and videocassettes in customs which were needed for a meeting that day. Negroponte believes that if this information was transferred through bits there would have been no trouble.

Pros about Atoms -

• We can hide them
• Difficult to Change and Copy
• easy to protect

Cons about Atoms -

• Bulky
• Expensive
• Difficult to Distribute

Pros about Bits -

• Easy to edit
• Easy to Broadcast
• Cheap

Cons about Bits -

• easy to fake
• easy to copy & steal
• spam

• The difference between atoms and bits
• how atoms and bits are changing the world
• common file extensions such as .jpeg (image file) & swf (shockwave file)
• how to create metadata about my documents
• use search when looking for documents - much easier than going through files and files of documents

UPC Blog 4 Communication Systems -

Email folders -
Creating the folders for our seperate course units was really useful and easy to do. i can now divide all my emails up into classes and they are easier to find when i need them.
Google Group Search -
in the google search under groups i typed in "Contiki Tours"
most of the disscussions within the groups were asking about feedback for the tours, opinions and comparisions on them.
This group fell under Recreation, Travel, Australia + NZ, Europe, Backpack and Budget.
Podcasts -
They are pre-reccorded audio files which can contain images & you can download them to your computer & put them on your ipods & mobiles.
I realised how handy podcasts are - especially the university's ones, as if you missed an important lecture you could get the lecture slides and the pod casts which would make it like you were really at the lecture.

5 things i learnt from the lecutre

• 4 diffrent types of communication - place dependant, place independant, cyberspace place dependancy & synchronous Vs Asynchronous
• Msn is ICT use
• "wiki Webs" - like a blog but all users can edit the context
• internet phones - able to plug them into the usb & internet connection and you can make calls for free - no STD's

5 things i learnt in the lecture

• the messages audiances remember - eg 10% of what they see, 60% of what they experiance interativley etc
• always have backup on another device incase slide show doesnt work
• dont use power point as only use of delivery - eg talk & summarise slides
• strategies to involve the audiance - eg - making eye contact, speaking clearly, asking questions that encourage your audiance to think etc
• use strategies for audiance involvment

• i learnt how to alphabetise refrences in word by using a shortcut
