information sheets that are relevant to me as a university student -
  • broadband content and copyright
  • copying services
  • education institutions
  • ideas: legal protection
  • Internet : copying and downloading

Copyright - US VS Sankus summary -
in May 2002 John Sankus was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for conspiring to violate the criminal copyright laws. He was the Co - leader of a online software piracy group known as DrinkOrDie. there were approximately 65 members in this group spread over 12 different countries. DrinkOrDie concealed its illegal activities by using a wide range of different technology and security measures.

My plan to protect myself on the Internet -
  • don't reveal personal information on the Internet
  • don't sign up to sites that offer rewards in exchange for personal information
  • never open emails with attachments unless i know what they are and who they are from

Readings -
http://www.eff.org/Privacy/eff_privacy_top_12.html
This web page has a very detailed list of ways to protect yourself on the Internet in alot of ways that i would never have thought about before reading this article.

http://ethics.csc.ncsu.edu/social/workplace/monitoring/
this was a really useful website as it contained lots of information on how you can be monitored on the Internet, especially at work and your legal rights to do with computers being monitored. it also contains peoples anecdotes of being monitored at work.

http://myecu.ecu.edu.au/courses/1/UPC0004.2007.1.ALL/content/_464704_1/reading_Mod05_1_4.pdf?bsession=22153305&bsession_str=session_id=22153305,user_id_pk1=149776,user_id_sos_id_pk2=1,one_time_token=
This pdf is all about computer viruses and how they came about. it is a good website because it thoroughly explains what a computer virus is(which i did not know before, i just thought it was something that deletes everything), the first types of viruses there were, about the Internet & how it first came about and recent types of viruses that need to be watched out for now.

http://www.bpmlegal.com/overview.html
this webpage explains intellectual property, something that before, i knew nothing about. intellectual property refers to patents, copyright and trademarks. it explains what a patent is ( they are appropriate for "useful things" or methods of doing something) and there are 3 types - utility, plant and design. also trademarks and the wide variety of things that they cover such as Tarzan's & the MGM lions roar, the shape of the coke bottle even colours and fragrances. copyright refers to things such as books, music, computer programs and architectural works.

http://www.pro-music.org/copyright/faq.htm
this site was interesting to look at as i learnt alot of information about downloading music and its legal and copyright issues. i knew that downloading music from the Internet was illegal but i didn't know that all file sharing was illegal & that if you own a cd it is illegal to play it in public.

http://www.tinkertech.net/tutor/virus.htm
This page talks about the different types of viruses that are contracted by simply opening an email with an attachment even if you don't open the attachment. the page also has a table displaying the different types of attachments & what attachment icons are more susceptible to viruses, such as the executable file.

in this weeks lecture and through the readings i learnt alot about the different types of copyright there were and why they exist. i found this week very interesting.

Data Information and Knowlwedge are all related. Data is facts which is then turned into information and once the information has been given and learnt it is turned into knowledge.

Readings -
http://www.systems-thinking.org/dikw/dikw.htm
This was a good wsebsite about explaning how data information and knowledge are all related, and how they all conincide with eachother. it is useful and easy to understand as it gives simple examples, and a diagram which makes the information even more clear.

http://camellia.shc.edu/literacy/index.html
This is a good website as it talks about knowledge in detail, the fundamentals of reaserch and overall how to effectivley master information literacy skills.

http://myecu.ecu.edu.au/courses/1/UPC0004.2007.1.ALL/content/_464640_1/reading_Mod02_1_3.pdf?bsession=22153305&bsession_str=session_id=22153305,user_id_pk1=149776,user_id_sos_id_pk2=1,one_time_token=
This pdf file is very effective in noting the relationships between data, information and knowledge. it also has several useful questions on how to evaluate if the information that may be collected is useful or viable, by asking questions such as - why are they collecting it? (the information).

10 Useful things I found in www.ecu.edu.au/library -

The catalogue -

this is a search engine connected to the ECU Library which allows you to go through ECU's database of books, CD's, Exam papers and more.

Medlineplus.com

This is a useful website as it deals with simple things like bug bites and stings to videos of surgeries. i think that there is a wide range of people who would benefit from looking at this website such as students studying medicine, doctors themselves and parents to find out about how to treat things like bites and stings even first aid techniques.

The Lecture
This lecture on Online Databases and why we use them was a good lecture as i learnt a lot about what can be found on them and the most effective ways to use them, also some issues (such as copyright) that are associated with them.

Blog 9

This week we covered search engines and how to use them effectivley.

Monash university

4 Strategies to structure a good search -

  • Try to avoid "stop words" such as or, too, we as search engines find these irrelevant and wont search for them.

  • If searching for a phrase or quote put them in quotation marks

  • try refine your search by using an advanced search using key words.

General Knowledge Quiz Screen shot -

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

With the General Knowledge quiz i just typed in the key words into google and found the most relevant web pages and got the answers from there.

i have found during this section of the unit that information found on the internet can be deciving and really needs to be examined carefully to be sure that you are not collecting the wrong type of information.

ICYouSee Critical Thinking Page Summary -
this web page is encouraging researchers on the Internet to be careful in collecting information as it might not always be correct.
The web page gives 6 critical steps for examining whether the page being looked at is valid or not. these steps are -

The page then also has some common criteria that is used when working out whether information found on the Internet is correct. These are -

  • Authority
  • Accuracy
  • Objectivity
  • Currency
  • Coverage
  • Value

This was a helpful website as it gave me some helpful pointers for assignment 2.

Reliving the Sixties: a Web Site Evaluation Assignment -

http://us.history.wisc.edu/hist102/lectures/lecture27.html

  • Is this site a good source for the information you need? Was the page worth visiting?

yes, it gave a lot of information about America in the 60's including information about the civil war and the war on poverty.

  • Do you have good reason to believe that the information on the site is accurate? Are the facts documented?

i so believe that the site is accurate as it was a lecture given to students and the facts are correct.

  • Who are the authors and who is responsible for the site? What is their expertise? What is their bias?

Stanley K. Schultz, Professor of History is the author of this lecture and the producer is William P. Tishler. their bias was that the 1960's was a good society but not great, as it had many faults.

  • What is the site's purpose or point of view?

the sites purpose was to inform readers about the more devastating effects of the 1960's that some might not have known.

  • Was this page designed for the Web, or is it something else, such as a government document or a journal article?

this was originally a lecture then it was transformed into a web page.

Readings evaluations -

http://www.virtualsalt.com/evalu8it.htm -

this was a really good text as the first paragraph describes the Internet as an grocery store and the websites are magazines. its a really good analogy for describing the content found on the Internet. it also suggests to use "CARS" to analyse a website -

C - Credibility

A - Accuracy

R - Reasonableness

S - Support

http://lib.nmsu.edu/instruction/evalcrit.html -

this website is also helpful, with a checklist of things that should be looked at before deciding that a website, or web page is factual. these points are -

Authority, Objectivity, Currency and Coverage.

http://myecu.ecu.edu.au/courses/1/UPC0004.2007.1.ALL/content/_464682_1/reading_Mod04_3_4_assign2_.pdf?bsession=22079634&bsession_str=session_id=22079634,user_id_pk1=149776,user_id_sos_id_pk2=1,one_time_token=

This page is very helpful and i will use it as a reference point in assignment two as it is very detailed in the things that need to be looked for in a good website.

http://www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/webcrit.html

this website uses much the same guidelines as the others for evaluating a website or page. this website was easy to read as it had a table of all the points to consider when evaluating a website.

http://www.library.ucla.edu/libraries/college/help/critical/ -

this web page has a good layout to look upon as it has many questions that are direct and easy to answer which would make it easier to tell if a web page is valuable or not.

Blog 7

For this weeks learning task we had to evaluate some websites and discuss their authenticity.

www.haggishunt.scotsman.com -
4 clues that give away that this site is a spoof -

  • Haggis is something you eat. it is a pudding made with liver & stomach etc of a sheep.

  • the "Haggis" looks like a platypus which is only found in Australia not Scotland

  • The website ends in .com, which means it is a commercial website, if it was real it would end in .org

  • under the list of what the Haggis's look like there is a rare "golden" haggis and there are no species that have a "rare golden" anything.

www.molossia.org
4 Clues that give away this site is a spoof -

  • the site doesn't say exactly where Molossia is, it gives several different places contained within the US which don't link up
  • when describing why Molossia is called it says that - " "morro", which means small rock or small hill, the suffix "ssia" being added because it sounds good." which is obviously supposed to be funny, not serious.

  • there are only 4 citizens in Molossia

  • you have to email the government before you visit Molossia

www.martinlutherking.org
my expectations for this site -
i think this site will be about Martin Luther King and all the great things he did for America, and it will also have a copy of his speech "I have a dream".
the website address makes the viewer to the site immediately know that it will contain information about Martin Luther King.

My first impressions of the site -
i think this is a spoof site because it has quotes of him saying "I’m not a negro tonight" and a video he made called "The brothas' be peaceful in da' hood".

My thoughts on the website after looking at it thoroughly -
This website is clearly defamatory to Martin Luther King calling him a "plastic god" & saying that his book "stride towards freedom" was plagiarized from numerous sources. They also call him a "sexual degenerate, an America-hating Communist, and a criminal betrayer of even the interests of his own people." this website also talks about things that may not have happened - and as a viewer I can’t be sure because it gives no proof.
I had a look at who published the site "Stormfront" - www.stormfront.org - and they seem to be associated with the K.K.K. fighting for "white pride". So this website was clearly bias and unsupported.

5 things i learned in this lecture -

  • What the ends of the websites mean eg. - .com - commercial nature, .net - a network - used when .com is not available, .org - a non profit website, used to state an idea
  • the www. is only one part of the internet, there's email etc.
  • that the internet and the net are different
  • that Tim Berners - Lee made the internet in 1989 as a way to facilitate sharing research and information
  • there are plenty of spoof websites out there and you have to be careful of what you believe.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j24/alexandraalecu/untitled8.jpg

5 things from this lecture that i learnt -
  • Endnote is intergrated into MS word
  • Endnote has a wide variety of Refrence Services
  • can be used as a Refrence manager
  • can be used as a Bibliography maker
  • not easy to use
